Betamethasone Dipropionate Cream

Betamethasone Dipropionate 0.05% Cream | Steroid Cream for Skin Rashes, Itching, and Inflammation

What is this medication?

Betamethasone dipropionate is a topical corticosteroid medication used on the skin to reduce inflammation, itching, and irritation.

Corticosteroids are synthetic forms of hormones produced by your adrenal glands. When applied to the skin, this medication helps calm immune responses that cause redness, swelling, and discomfort.

This medication works by decreasing inflammation and narrowing blood vessels in the treated area, which helps relieve symptoms such as itching and irritation.

Providers may prescribe this medication for inflammatory skin conditions such as:

  • eczema

  • dermatitis (including allergic or contact dermatitis)

  • rashes or skin irritation

  • psoriasis

  • insect bites or localized skin inflammation

This medication should only be used on the skin and only for the condition it was prescribed to treat.

    Risks while using topical corticosteroids:

    This may lead to:

    • suppression of the body’s natural steroid production (HPA axis suppression)

    • increased blood sugar levels

    • hormonal effects

    • features of Cushing’s syndrome with excessive use

Children may absorb more medication through the skin and are at higher risk for side effects.

If a skin infection develops, your provider may prescribe additional treatment.

  • Betamethasone dipropionate is a topical medication, but interactions may still occur.

Tell your healthcare provider about all medications and products you are using.

    Examples include:

    • other topical medications applied to the same area

    • medicated creams, ointments, or lotions

    • products that may irritate the skin or affect absorption

Using multiple products on the same area may increase irritation or reduce effectiveness.
