Doxycycline

Doxycycline 100mg | Antibiotic for Bacterial Infections, Acne, and Respiratory Illness

What is this medication?

Doxycycline contains doxycycline hyclate, a tetracycline-class antibiotic used to treat a wide range of bacterial infections in the body.

This medication works by stopping the growth and spread of bacteria. It does this by interfering with the bacteria’s ability to produce proteins that are necessary for survival, which helps the body’s immune system eliminate the infection more effectively.

Providers may prescribe doxycycline to treat infections affecting different parts of the body. It is commonly used when a bacterial infection is suspected or confirmed and requires antibiotic treatment.

This medication may be prescribed for conditions such as:

  • respiratory infections such as bronchitis or pneumonia

  • sinus infections

  • skin infections, including acne

  • certain sexually transmitted infections

  • tick-borne illnesses such as Lyme disease

  • other bacterial infections as determined by your provider

Doxycycline works throughout the body to control bacterial infections and reduce symptoms such as inflammation, swelling, and infection-related discomfort.

This medication only treats bacterial infections and will not work for viral illnesses such as the common cold or flu.

This medication should only be used when prescribed by a licensed healthcare provider.

  • When traveling with bismuth subsalicylate:

    • Store the medication at 59°F to 86°F (15°C to 30°C)

    • Keep it protected from moisture and excessive heat

    • Keep the bottle tightly closed when not in use

    • Do not use the medication if the tamper-evident seal is broken or missing

    While traveling:

    • Keep the medication in its original labeled container

    • Store it in a cool, dry place

    • Carry medications in your carry-on luggage when flying

    • If you develop diarrhea, drink plenty of fluids to help prevent dehydration

Only use this medication as directed by your provider and for short-term symptom relief.

When should this medication be used?

Your provider may recommend doxycycline if you develop symptoms that may indicate a bacterial infection during travel.

Common situations where doxycycline may be used include:

  • persistent sinus congestion or sinus pressure

  • worsening cough with thick yellow or green mucus

  • bacterial respiratory infections

  • skin infections or infected wounds

  • certain sexually transmitted infections

  • acne or inflammatory skin conditions caused by bacteria

  • tick-borne illnesses such as Lyme disease

  • certain gastrointestinal infections

  • prevention of malaria in areas where the infection is common

Antibiotics should only be used when recommended by a healthcare provider or when symptoms strongly suggest a bacterial infection.

Do not use doxycycline to treat viral illnesses unless specifically instructed by your provider.

  • Follow the directions on your prescription label and your provider’s instructions.

General guidance for safe use includes:

    • Take the medication exactly as prescribed.

    • Take doses at evenly spaced times each day.

    • Complete the full course of treatment unless your provider instructs otherwise.

    • Do not skip doses, even if symptoms begin to improve.

To reduce stomach irritation and throat irritation:

    • Take the tablet with a full glass of water.

    • Remain upright for at least 30 minutes after taking the medication.

    • Avoid lying down immediately after taking the tablet.

Drinking plenty of fluids while taking doxycycline may help reduce the risk of irritation or ulceration of the esophagus.

Doxycycline may be taken with food if stomach upset occurs, although some foods may slightly reduce absorption.

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember unless it is almost time for your next dose. Do not take two doses at the same time.

    • If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember unless it is almost time for your next dose.

    • Do not take two doses at the same time.

Always follow the instructions on the pharmacy label provided with your medication.

  • While taking doxycycline, it is important to follow these precautions to ensure safe and effective use:

    • Take this medication with a full glass of water and remain upright for at least 30 minutes after taking it to reduce the risk of throat or esophageal irritation

    • Avoid lying down immediately after taking your dose, as this can increase the risk of irritation or ulceration in the esophagus

    • Doxycycline can make your skin more sensitive to sunlight. Limit sun exposure, wear protective clothing, and use sunscreen to reduce the risk of severe sunburn

    • Avoid taking this medication at the same time as antacids, calcium, iron, magnesium, zinc, or bismuth-containing products, as they can reduce how well doxycycline is absorbed

    • Take this medication exactly as prescribed and complete the full course, even if you start to feel better before finishing it

    • Do not take more than the prescribed dose or use it for longer than instructed

    • Drink plenty of fluids while taking this medication unless your provider has advised otherwise

    • If you develop severe diarrhea, abdominal cramping, or bloody stools, contact your healthcare provider, as this may be a sign of a serious intestinal condition

    • Hormonal birth control may be less effective while taking doxycycline. Use an additional form of contraception if advised by your provider

    • Inform your healthcare provider if you experience unusual symptoms such as persistent headache, vision changes, or severe skin reactions

Doxycycline affects how your body responds to bacteria and environmental exposure. Staying consistent with dosing, avoiding interactions, and monitoring for side effects will help reduce risks and improve treatment effectiveness.

  • Avoid taking doxycycline at the same time as:

    • antacids containing aluminum, magnesium, or calcium

    • iron supplements

    • bismuth-containing medications such as bismuth subsalicylate

    • calcium supplements

These products may interfere with the absorption of doxycycline and reduce its effectiveness.

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember unless it is almost time for your next dose. Do not take two doses at the same time.

Important Safety Information

  • Most serious warnings may include:

    • severe allergic reactions including rash, swelling, or difficulty breathing

    • severe diarrhea caused by intestinal infection

    • liver problems

    • severe skin reactions

    • inflammation or ulceration of the esophagus

    • increased sensitivity to sunlight

Doxycycline can cause photosensitivity, which means your skin may become more sensitive to sunlight and may burn more easily than normal.

Like other antibiotics, doxycycline may occasionally allow overgrowth of non-susceptible organisms such as fungi. If symptoms worsen or new symptoms appear during treatment, contact your provider.

  • Stop taking this medication and seek immediate medical care if you experience:

    • signs of a severe allergic reaction such as rash, hives, itching, or swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat

    • difficulty breathing or trouble swallowing

    • severe or unusual drowsiness, confusion, or inability to stay awake

    • sudden vision changes, including blurred vision that does not resolve

    • severe dizziness or symptoms that worsen instead of improving

    • any new or concerning symptoms that feel severe or unexpected

    Tell Your Healthcare Provider

Contact your healthcare provider if you experience:

    • persistent or worsening dizziness or vertigo

    • ongoing drowsiness that interferes with daily activities

    • dry mouth, fatigue, or headache that becomes bothersome or does not improve

    • vomiting or symptoms that do not improve with treatment

    • side effects that feel unusual, severe, or concerning

    • any questions about how to safely continue or adjust your medication

  • Do not take doxycycline if you:

    • have a known allergy to doxycycline or other tetracycline antibiotics (such as tetracycline or minocycline), as this may cause a serious allergic reaction

    • are pregnant or may become pregnant, as doxycycline can harm an unborn baby and may affect bone and tooth development

    • are breastfeeding, unless specifically directed by your healthcare provider, as this medication can pass into breast milk and affect a nursing infant

    • are a child under 8 years old, unless your provider determines it is necessary, as doxycycline can cause permanent tooth discoloration and affect bone growth

    • have previously experienced severe reactions to tetracycline antibiotics, including serious skin reactions or hypersensitivity

If you are unsure whether this medication is safe for you, speak with your healthcare provider before starting treatment.

  • Tell your provider if you:

    • are allergic to doxycycline, tetracyclines, or other medications

    • have liver disease

    • have difficulty swallowing pills or a history of esophageal irritation

    • are pregnant or planning to become pregnant

    • are breastfeeding

    • take blood thinners or other prescription medications

    • take supplements containing calcium, magnesium, iron, or zinc

Doxycycline is generally not recommended during pregnancy because tetracycline antibiotics may affect fetal bone and tooth development.

This medication is typically not recommended for children under the age of 8 unless specifically prescribed by a provider.

  • Doxycycline is generally well tolerated, but like all medications, it can cause side effects.

    Common side effects may include:

    • nausea or upset stomach

    • vomiting

    • diarrhea

    • loss of appetite

    • sensitivity to sunlight (sunburn more easily)

These side effects are usually mild and may improve as your body adjusts to the medication. Taking doxycycline with a full glass of water and following your provider’s instructions may help reduce stomach discomfort.

Serious side effects (seek medical care immediately) may include:

    • severe allergic reactions such as rash, hives, swelling of the face or throat, or difficulty breathing

    • severe skin reactions, including blistering, peeling skin, or painful rash

    • severe or persistent headache, vision changes, or pressure behind the eyes, which may be a sign of increased pressure in the brain (intracranial hypertension)

    • severe diarrhea, watery stools, or bloody stools, which may indicate a serious intestinal condition (C. difficile-associated diarrhea)

    • difficulty swallowing or chest pain when swallowing, which may indicate irritation or ulceration of the esophagus

    • unusual bruising or bleeding, or signs of liver problems such as yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine, or severe fatigue

Contact your healthcare provider if you experience side effects that are persistent, worsening, or concerning.

  • Taking more doxycycline than prescribed may increase the risk of side effects and toxicity.

    Symptoms of overdose may include:

    • severe nausea or vomiting

    • persistent stomach pain

    • diarrhea

    • loss of appetite

    • irritation or ulceration of the throat or esophagus

In some cases, taking too much doxycycline may also increase the risk of liver-related side effects or other serious reactions.

If you think you have taken too much of this medication, contact your healthcare provider, local poison control center, or seek medical care right away.

For immediate help, you can call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222.

  • It is important to safely dispose of doxycycline when it is no longer needed or has expired.

    • Do not keep leftover antibiotic medication for future use unless instructed by your healthcare provider

    • Do not share this medication with others, even if they have similar symptoms

    • Do not flush doxycycline down the toilet or pour it down the drain unless specifically instructed

Use a local medication take-back program or pharmacy disposal service when available

If a take-back option is not available:

    • Mix the medication with an undesirable substance such as coffee grounds or cat litter

    • Place the mixture in a sealed bag or container

    • Dispose of it in your household trash

Proper disposal helps prevent accidental ingestion, misuse, and environmental contamination.

Disclaimers

    • Patients should only begin an antibiotic when symptoms clearly match the guidance provided in the medication instructions or when directed by a licensed healthcare provider.

    • If symptoms are severe, worsening, or do not improve within the expected time frame, patients should seek medical care as soon as possible.

    • Travel kit antibiotics are intended for short-term use during travel and should not be used for routine illnesses or without appropriate medical guidance.

    • Patients should never share prescription medications with others and should never take antibiotics that were prescribed for another individual.

To help prevent antibiotic overuse, antibiotic stockpiling, and unsafe self-treatment, Superior Health & Wellness’s practices the following stewardship principles:

    • antibiotics are prescribed only after review by a licensed provider for appropriate travel-related use

    • quantities are limited to the intended treatment course

    • refills or replacement requests require clinical review, and may be limited

    • patients should not save antibiotics for unrelated future illnesses or share them with others

    • patients should contact a provider if symptoms worsen, do not improve, or appear inconsistent with a bacterial infection

    • antibiotics in travel kits are intended for appropriate, provider-directed use only

These stewardship principles align with the prescribing information’s warnings to use the medication only for proven or strongly suspected bacterial infections and to counsel patients against misuse that can contribute to drug-resistant bacteria.
