Most Serious Warnings

Minocycline can cause:

  • Permanent tooth discoloration and enamel changes if used during pregnancy or in children under 8 years of age 

  • Fetal harm if taken during pregnancy 

  • Severe skin reactions, including Drug Reaction with Eosinophilia and Systemic Symptoms (DRESS) 

  • Intracranial hypertension (increased pressure in the brain), which may cause headache, blurred vision, or vision loss 

  • Clostridium difficile–associated diarrhea, which may occur during or after treatment 

  • Severe allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis 

  • Liver toxicity, including hepatitis and rare cases of liver failure 

Who Should NOT Take Minocycline

Do not take this medication if you:

  • Are allergic to minocycline or other tetracycline antibiotics 

  • Are pregnant

  • Are a child under 8 years of age 

Before Taking Minocycline, Tell Your Healthcare Provider if You:

  • Have liver or kidney disease 

  • Have a history of intracranial hypertension or severe headaches 

  • Are taking isotretinoin, blood thinners, penicillin antibiotics, ergot medications, iron supplements, or antacids containing aluminum, calcium, or magnesium 

  • Use oral contraceptives, as effectiveness may be reduced 

  • Are breastfeeding, as tetracyclines pass into breast milk 

Possible Side Effects

  • Common:

  • Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea 

  • Dizziness, lightheadedness, or vertigo 

  • Photosensitivity (increased risk of sunburn) 

Serious (seek medical care immediately):

  • Severe or persistent headache, blurred or double vision 

  • Watery or bloody diarrhea 

  • Rash, hives, swelling of the face or throat, difficulty breathing 

  • Yellowing of the skin or eyes, severe fatigue, or abdominal pain 

  • Severe skin reactions with fever or swollen lymph nodes 

While Taking Minocycline

  • Avoid excessive sunlight or tanning beds due to risk of severe sunburn 

  • Take with a full glass of liquid to reduce the risk of throat irritation or ulceration 

  • Do not skip doses and complete the full prescribed course to reduce antibiotic resistance 

Pregnancy and Breastfeeding

Minocycline may harm an unborn baby and can cause permanent tooth discoloration during fetal development  . It is not recommended during pregnancy or in children under 8 years of age. Tetracyclines are excreted in breast milk and may pose risks to nursing infants  .

Overdose

Symptoms of overdose may include dizziness, nausea, and vomiting  . If overdose is suspected, seek emergency medical attention or contact Poison Control immediately.

Missed Dosage

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. Do not double doses. Follow your provider’s instructions.

Storage

  • Store at 20° to 25°C (68° to 77°F) 

  • Protect from light, moisture, and excessive heat 

  • Keep out of reach of children
