Augmentin | Amoxicillin, 875mg / Clavulanate, 125mg Antibiotic for Sinus, Respiratory, and Bacterial Infections

What is this medication?

Amoxicillin-clavulanate is a combination antibiotic used to treat bacterial infections throughout the body.

It contains two medications:

  • Amoxicillin – a penicillin-type antibiotic that kills bacteria

  • Clavulanate potassium – a medication that helps prevent bacteria from resisting the antibiotic

This combination allows the medication to treat infections that may not respond to amoxicillin alone.

This medication is commonly prescribed to treat:

  • Sinus infections

  • Respiratory infections (such as bronchitis or pneumonia)

  • Ear infections

  • Skin infections

  • Urinary tract infections

It works by stopping the growth of bacteria and helping your body clear the infection. 

This medication should only be used when prescribed by a licensed healthcare provider.

    • Store at 68°F to 77°F (20°C to 25°C) 

    • Keep in a tightly closed container

    • Keep medication in original labeled packaging

    • Protect from moisture and excessive heat

    • Carry medication in your carry-on bag when flying

When should this medication be used?

Your provider may recommend using this medication if you experience symptoms of a bacterial infection, such as:

  • Persistent sinus pressure or facial pain

  • Fever with respiratory symptoms

  • Worsening cough with thick mucus

  • Ear pain or pressure

  • Skin redness, swelling, or drainage

  • Painful or frequent urination

This medication is used specifically for bacterial infections.

Do not use this medication for viral illnesses, such as:

  • the common cold

  • influenza (flu)

  • most sore throats

Do not start this medication unless your provider has instructed you to do so.

  • Follow the directions on your prescription label and the instructions provided by your healthcare provider.

    General guidance for safe use:

    • Take the medication exactly as prescribed

    • Take each dose at the start of a meal to improve absorption and reduce stomach upset 

    • Take doses at evenly spaced intervals (often every 12 hours for 875 mg tablets) 

    • Swallow tablets with a full glass of water

    • Do not crush or split unless instructed

    • Complete the full course of treatment, even if you feel better

    Stopping early may cause the infection to return and increase antibiotic resistance.

      • Take the missed dose as soon as you remember

      • If it is close to your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose

      • Do not take two doses at the same time

      If you are unsure what to do, contact your provider or pharmacist.

  • While taking amoxicillin-clavulanate:

    • Take each dose with food to reduce stomach upset

    • Monitor for signs of allergic reaction, especially if you have a history of penicillin allergy

    • Stay well hydrated to support kidney function

    • Inform any healthcare provider that you are taking an antibiotic

    • Do not skip doses or stop early

    Risks while taking this medication:

    • Antibiotics can disrupt normal gut bacteria and cause diarrhea

    • Overgrowth of other organisms (such as yeast infections) may occur 

    • Severe diarrhea related to intestinal infection can occur during or after treatment 

    Contact your provider if symptoms worsen or do not improve.

  • Amoxicillin-clavulanate may interact with other medications.

    Tell your healthcare provider about all medications you are taking.

    Examples of potential interactions include:

    • Probenecid – may increase antibiotic levels in the body 

    • Blood thinners (warfarin) – may increase bleeding risk and require monitoring 

    • Allopurinol – may increase risk of skin rash 

    • Oral contraceptives – may reduce effectiveness of birth control

Important Safety Information

  • Amoxicillin-clavulanate can cause serious side effects in some individuals.

    Most serious warnings may include:

    Serious allergic reactions have been reported with penicillin antibiotics.

    Stop taking this medication and seek immediate medical care if you experience:

    • difficulty breathing

    • swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat

    • severe rash or hives

    Severe skin reactions may occur, including:

    • blistering or peeling skin

    • widespread rash or lesions 

    Severe intestinal infection (C. difficile) may occur:

    • persistent diarrhea

    • bloody stools

    • abdominal pain

    • symptoms that may occur even weeks after treatment 

    Liver problems may occur:

    • yellowing of skin or eyes

    • dark urine

    • fatigue or abdominal pain

    • you develop difficulty breathing

    • you have swelling of the face or throat

    • you develop a severe or spreading rash

    • you experience persistent or bloody diarrhea

    • you notice yellowing of the skin or eyes

  • Do not take this medication if you:

    • have had a serious allergic reaction to penicillin or similar antibiotics

    • have a history of severe skin reactions to this medication

    • have had liver problems or jaundice caused by this medication

  • Tell your provider if you:

    • have a history of medication allergies

    • have liver disease

    • have kidney disease

    • have had antibiotic-associated diarrhea

    • are pregnant or breastfeeding

    Also tell your provider if you take:

    • blood thinners

    • gout medications

    • hormonal birth control

    • other antibiotics or prescription medications

  • Common side effects may include:

    • diarrhea

    • nausea

    • vomiting

    • skin rash

    • vaginal yeast infection

    These are the most frequently reported side effects. 

    Serious side effects (seek medical care immediately):

    • severe allergic reaction

    • severe diarrhea

    • liver problems

    • severe skin reactions

    Patients are encouraged to report negative side effects to the FDA at 1-800-FDA-1088.

  • Symptoms of overdose may include:

    • severe nausea or vomiting

    • diarrhea

    • decreased urine output

    • kidney complications (including crystalluria or kidney injury) 

    If overdose is suspected, seek medical care immediately.

    • Do not flush this medication unless instructed

    • Do not pour into drains

    • Use a medication take-back program if available

    • If not available, mix with an undesirable substance and dispose in the trash

    Keep out of reach of children and pets.
