What is this medication?

Amoxicillin-clavulanate is a combination antibiotic used to treat bacterial infections throughout the body.

It contains two medications:

  • Amoxicillin – a penicillin-type antibiotic that kills bacteria

  • Clavulanate potassium – a medication that helps prevent bacteria from resisting the antibiotic

This combination allows the medication to treat infections that may not respond to amoxicillin alone.

This medication is commonly prescribed to treat:

  • Sinus infections

  • Respiratory infections (such as bronchitis or pneumonia)

  • Ear infections

  • Skin infections

  • Urinary tract infections

It works by stopping the growth of bacteria and helping your body clear the infection. 

This medication should only be used when prescribed by a licensed healthcare provider.

When should this medication be used?

Your provider may recommend using this medication if you experience symptoms of a bacterial infection, such as:

  • Persistent sinus pressure or facial pain

  • Fever with respiratory symptoms

  • Worsening cough with thick mucus

  • Ear pain or pressure

  • Skin redness, swelling, or drainage

  • Painful or frequent urination

This medication is used specifically for bacterial infections.

Do not use this medication for viral illnesses, such as:

  • the common cold

  • influenza (flu)

  • most sore throats

Do not start this medication unless your provider has instructed you to do so.
