What is this medication?
Amoxicillin-clavulanate is a combination antibiotic used to treat bacterial infections throughout the body.
It contains two medications:
Amoxicillin – a penicillin-type antibiotic that kills bacteria
Clavulanate potassium – a medication that helps prevent bacteria from resisting the antibiotic
This combination allows the medication to treat infections that may not respond to amoxicillin alone.
This medication is commonly prescribed to treat:
Sinus infections
Respiratory infections (such as bronchitis or pneumonia)
Ear infections
Skin infections
Urinary tract infections
It works by stopping the growth of bacteria and helping your body clear the infection.

When should this medication be used?
Your provider may recommend using this medication if you experience symptoms of a bacterial infection, such as:

Ear pain or pressure
Skin redness, swelling, or drainage
Painful or frequent urination
This medication is used specifically for bacterial infections.
Do not use this medication for viral illnesses, such as:
the common cold
influenza (flu)
most sore throats
Do not start this medication unless your provider has instructed you to do so.

Follow the directions on your prescription label and the instructions provided by your healthcare provider.
General guidance for safe use:
Take the medication exactly as prescribed
Take each dose at the start of a meal to improve absorption and reduce stomach upset
Take doses at evenly spaced intervals (often every 12 hours for 875 mg tablets)
Swallow tablets with a full glass of water
Do not crush or split unless instructed
Complete the full course of treatment, even if you feel better
Stopping early may cause the infection to return and increase antibiotic resistance.

Take the missed dose as soon as you remember
If it is close to your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose
Do not take two doses at the same time

While taking amoxicillin-clavulanate:
Take each dose with food to reduce stomach upset
Monitor for signs of allergic reaction, especially if you have a history of penicillin allergy
Stay well hydrated to support kidney function

are pregnant or breastfeeding
Also tell your provider if you take:
blood thinners
gout medications
hormonal birth control
other antibiotics or prescription medications

vaginal yeast infection
