What is this medication?
Betamethasone dipropionate is a topical corticosteroid medication used on the skin to reduce inflammation, itching, and irritation.
Corticosteroids are synthetic forms of hormones produced by your adrenal glands. When applied to the skin, this medication helps calm immune responses that cause redness, swelling, and discomfort.
This medication works by decreasing inflammation and narrowing blood vessels in the treated area, which helps relieve symptoms such as itching and irritation.
Providers may prescribe this medication for inflammatory skin conditions such as:
eczema
dermatitis (including allergic or contact dermatitis)
rashes or skin irritation
psoriasis

When should this medication be used?
Your provider may recommend using this medication if you experience symptoms such as:
redness, swelling, or inflammation of the skin
itching or irritation
allergic skin reactions
dry, inflamed, or irritated patches of skin
flare-ups of chronic skin conditions like eczema or psoriasis
This medication is used to control symptoms and reduce inflammation. It does not cure the underlying condition.
Do not start this medication unless your provider has instructed you to do so.

Follow the directions on your prescription label and the instructions provided by your healthcare provider.
General instructions for use include:
Apply a thin layer to the affected area of skin once daily, or as directed by your provider
In some cases, your provider may instruct you to apply it twice daily
Gently rub the medication into the skin until it is evenly distributed
Wash your hands before and after applying, unless treating your hands
Avoid applying to the eyes, mouth, or inside the nose
Do not use on large areas of the body unless instructed
Do not cover, wrap, or bandage the area unless directed by your provider
This medication is for external use only and should not be used in the eyes.

Apply the medication as soon as you remember
If it is close to your next scheduled application, skip the missed dose
Do not apply extra medication to make up for a missed dose
If you are unsure how to adjust your schedule after a missed dose, contact your pharmacy or provider.

While using betamethasone dipropionate:
Use only as directed and for the prescribed condition
Do not use for longer than recommended
Avoid applying to large areas of skin unless instructed
Do not use under tight bandages or coverings unless directed
Avoid contact with eyes and sensitive areas
Report any skin irritation or worsening symptoms
Risks while using topical corticosteroids:
Topical steroids can be absorbed through the skin, especially with prolonged use or use over large areas.
This may lead to:
suppression of the body’s natural steroid production (HPA axis suppression)
increased blood sugar levels
hormonal effects
features of Cushing’s syndrome with excessive use
Children may absorb more medication through the skin and are at higher risk for side effects.
If a skin infection develops, your provider may prescribe additional treatment.

Store at room temperature between 68°F and 77°F (20°C to 25°C)
Short temperature excursions between 59°F and 86°F are permitted
Protect from light and do not freeze
Keep the medication in its original labeled packaging
Keep the tube tightly closed when not in use
Store in a cool, dry place away from heat and moisture
Carry medication in your carry-on bag when traveling
Do not expose to extreme temperatures (cars, luggage)
Only use as directed by your provider
Do not share this medication with others
