Betamethasone Dipropionate 0.05% Ointment

(generic Lotrimin™)

What is this medication?

Betamethasone dipropionate is a topical corticosteroid medication used on the skin to reduce inflammation, itching, and irritation.

Corticosteroids are synthetic forms of hormones produced by your adrenal glands. When applied to the skin, this medication helps calm immune responses that cause redness, swelling, and discomfort.

This medication works by decreasing inflammation and narrowing blood vessels in the treated area, which helps relieve symptoms such as itching and irritation.

Providers may prescribe this medication for inflammatory skin conditions such as:

  • eczema

  • dermatitis (including allergic or contact dermatitis)

  • rashes or skin irritation

  • psoriasis

  • insect bites or localized skin inflammation

This medication should only be used on the skin and only for the condition it was prescribed to treat.
