Topical Antiviral Cream for Cold Sores and Herpes Lesions

Acyclovir 5% Ointment

What is this medication?

Topical acyclovir is an antiviral medication used to treat infections caused by herpes viruses, including herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1), herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2), and in some cases varicella-zoster virus.

This medication is applied directly to the skin and works by stopping the virus from multiplying and spreading, which can help the body control the infection more quickly.

Acyclovir is a synthetic antiviral nucleoside analogue that interferes with viral DNA replication. Once inside infected cells, the drug is converted into its active form, which blocks viral DNA polymerase and prevents the virus from copying its genetic material.

By slowing viral replication, topical acyclovir may help:

  • Reduce the duration of symptoms

  • Support faster healing of herpes lesions

  • Decrease viral shedding in certain infections

  • Reduce discomfort associated with outbreaks

This medication does not cure herpes infections and does not eliminate the virus from the body. The virus can remain dormant and may reactivate in the future.

This medication should only be used when prescribed by a licensed healthcare provider.

  • Painful blisters or sores around the mouth or lips
