Spironolactone can cause hyperkalemia, which may be severe or life threatening. Risk is increased in patients with kidney disease or when taken with medications or supplements that raise potassium levels. Regular monitoring of potassium and kidney function is required.
Do not take spironolactone if you have hyperkalemia, Addison’s disease, or are taking eplerenone.
Before starting treatment, tell your provider if you have kidney disease, liver disease, diabetes, or if you are pregnant, planning pregnancy, or breastfeeding. Spironolactone may affect male fetal development and should generally be avoided in pregnancy unless specifically directed by your provider.
Avoid potassium supplements and potassium containing salt substitutes unless directed by your provider. Take this medication exactly as prescribed and attend all recommended lab monitoring appointments.
