NP Thyroid® | Oral Thyroid Tablets

Important Safety Information: NP Thyroid® | Oral Thyroid Tablets

What is this?

This Important Safety Information summarizes key warnings and precautions for NP Thyroid®, a prescription oral thyroid hormone medication containing levothyroxine (T4) and liothyronine (T3). It is indicated for replacement or supplemental therapy in patients with hypothyroidism and for certain thyroid-related conditions as determined by a licensed healthcare provider. According to the manufacturer labeling, NP Thyroid is a natural preparation derived from porcine thyroid glands and is marketed as an unapproved drug product that has not been found by the FDA to be safe and effective, and its labeling has not been approved by the FDA. This summary does not include all available information. Always read your medication label and follow your provider’s instructions.

Most Serious Warnings

Product can cause:

  • Excess thyroid hormone levels (hyperthyroidism) leading to chest pain, rapid or irregular heartbeat, palpitations, shortness of breath, or heart attack

  • Worsening of angina or underlying heart disease, especially in older adults

  • Severe allergic reactions, including rash, hives, or swelling

  • Bone loss with long-term overtreatment

  • Life-threatening toxicity if taken in excessive doses

Thyroid hormones should not be used for weight loss. In patients with normal thyroid function, doses within the daily hormonal requirement are ineffective for weight reduction. Larger doses may produce serious or life-threatening toxicity, particularly when combined with sympathomimetic agents.

Who Should NOT Take NP Thyroid

Do not take this medication if you:

  • Have untreated adrenal insufficiency

  • Have untreated thyrotoxicosis (overactive thyroid)

  • Have a known hypersensitivity to thyroid hormone preparations or any ingredient in the formulation

Before Taking NP Thyroid, Tell Your Healthcare Provider if You:

  • Have heart disease, angina, irregular heartbeat, or high blood pressure

  • Have diabetes or use insulin or oral hypoglycemic medications

  • Take oral anticoagulants such as warfarin

  • Are pregnant or planning pregnancy

  • Are breastfeeding

  • Take estrogen, oral contraceptives, corticosteroids, androgens, or iodine-containing products

  • Take biotin or biotin-containing supplements

  • Have pituitary or adrenal gland disorders

  • Increased heart rate

  • Palpitations

  • Nervousness or anxiety

  • Heat intolerance

  • Sweating

  • Weight loss

  • Tremors

  • Insomnia

  • Temporary hair loss in children

Serious (seek medical care immediately):

  • Fainting

  • Severe rapid or irregular heartbeat

  • Signs of allergic reaction such as swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat

While Taking NP Thyroid

Tell your healthcare provider immediately if you:

  • Experience chest pain or worsening angina

  • Develop rapid or irregular heartbeat

  • Notice unexplained weight changes

  • Experience excessive sweating, nervousness, or tremors

  • Have changes in blood sugar control if diabetic

Pregnancy and Breastfeeding

Thyroid hormone replacement therapy should not be discontinued during pregnancy in patients with hypothyroidism. Thyroid hormones do not readily cross the placental barrier and are not associated with known serious adverse fetal effects when appropriately dosed. Minimal amounts are excreted in breast milk. Use during pregnancy and breastfeeding should remain under provider supervision.

Overdose

Symptoms of overdose may resemble hyperthyroidism and include rapid heartbeat, chest pain, tremors, nervousness, fever, sweating, vomiting, diarrhea, or confusion. If overdose is suspected, seek emergency medical care immediately or contact Poison Control.

Missed Dosage

If you miss a dose:

  • Take it as soon as you remember unless it is close to your next scheduled dose

  • Do not double the next dose

  • Contact your provider if you are unsure how to resume therapy

Laboratory Monitoring

Regular monitoring of TSH and thyroid hormone levels is required to ensure appropriate dosing. Biotin supplements should be stopped at least 2 days prior to thyroid function testing, as they may interfere with laboratory results.

Storage

  • Store in a tight container

  • Protect from light and moisture

  • Store between 59°F and 86°F (15°C–30°C)

  • Keep out of reach of children

Provider Oversight and Order Review

NP Thyroid dosing must be individualized based on clinical response and laboratory values. Adjustments are typically made within the first four weeks of therapy. Close monitoring is especially important in elderly patients and those with cardiovascular disease.

Telemedicine Disclosure

If prescribed via telemedicine, contact your prescribing clinician immediately if you experience concerning or severe symptoms, or seek emergency medical care.
