Estradiol therapy is not appropriate for everyone. Do not use estradiol if you have a history of estrogen-dependent cancers, unexplained vaginal bleeding, active or past blood clots, stroke, heart attack, or certain liver conditions unless specifically directed by your provider.
Estrogen therapy may increase the risk of blood clots, stroke, certain cancers, and cardiovascular events in some individuals. Risk may be higher in patients who smoke or have underlying cardiovascular risk factors.
If you have an intact uterus, your provider may recommend a progestogen in combination with estradiol to reduce the risk of endometrial hyperplasia.
Report symptoms such as chest pain, shortness of breath, sudden severe headache, vision changes, leg swelling, or unusual vaginal bleeding immediately. Regular follow-up visits and appropriate screening exams are required while on hormone therapy.
